TORONTO As her two best-selling books and popular television show, LA Ink, can attest, there isn"t a lot celebrity tattooist Kat Von D won"t talk about.
She freely gabs about her exes both M�tley Cr�e"s Nikki Sixx and her former husband Oliver Peck and the recent fire at her home in which she lost everything, including her beloved cat, Valentine.
Just don"t ask about her new beau, Sandra Bullock"s ex, Jesse James, because she"s not spilling any details.
But in her latest book, The Tattoo Chronicles, Von D opens up her personal journal and bares pretty much everything else. Part coffee table book, part ode to a past relationship, the book is an intimate look at Von D"s life that starts in the spring of 2008 and ends in the summer of 2009.
The whole book captures the moment she met and fell in love with Sixx.
SNikki was there for the entire process of making this book, she says during a whirlwind visit to Toronto. SLooking back on this book, I"m so proud of it and so is Nikki. We still talk all the time; I talked to him last night.
Reflecting on her entries, which depict a couple very much in love, Von D says she didn"t dwell on why that relationship didn"t work.
SI don"t think of it like, Oh no, I failed," she says. SI don"t think relationships ever fail. There"s no such thing as a failed relationship. Relationships take their course. And for us, at this time, it"s taken its course.
Although The Tattoo Chronicles is informed by her time with Sixx, many of her entries cover the people she inks in her Hollywood shop. Relaying the stories behind each of the tattoos makes her show and the book relatable, she says.
The fact, though, that many of those tales revolve around death and loss doesn"t trouble her at all.
Quite the contrary.
SIt"s a common subject that comes up in my world with my clients, says Von D. SDeath is something I feel pretty comfortable talking about. It"s never really bothered me.
SHearing these stories has made me a better listener, she continues. SThey"re just real and honest and I really think they will help people.
The book is chock full of stories and images of Von D"s famous pals, but it is the tale of a regular person that she immediately points to as her favourite.
SGlen Barnes, the sheriff who lost his son, she pauses. SSometimes it seems the reason or purpose for something doesn"t show itself until years later, but I feel like that story is such a powerful lesson. Glen"s son became a face for organ donation and he was able to meet the little kid who was saved because of him.
Tattoos as an expression of love also make appearances, including one she got for Sixx that depicts his initial on her ring finger.
SI don"t think it"s the most romantic thing you can do, she says, with a smile. SI liked the idea of getting Nikki"s initial on my ring finger because it was like a secret note between the two of us.
SEven though tattoos tend to be an outward expression, I think ultimately it"s important that your tattoos express what"s inside. Sure, people can see them, but if you"re just getting tattoos for the aesthetics of pleasing the rest of the world, what"s the point?
So following her split from Sixx, does she have any regrets when it comes to inking lovers" names on her body?
SNames as curses, she says shaking her head. SThat question comes up a lot. I honestly feel like maybe we"re programmed to put too much emphasis on that stuff. With true love, you don"t need to worry about that stuff. Or at least you shouldn"t So, no regrets. I don"t have any regrets.
Von D back to work days after devastating house fire
It seems a bit odd to be starting a big promotional tour, just days after a raging blaze destroys your home.
But for celebrity tattooist, Kat Von D, getting out of town and meeting her fans was exactly what she needed to do after a fire destroyed her home in the Hollywood Hills, killing her beloved cat Valentine.
SI"m not so bummed out about the material things that were in it because that stuff was just stuff, she says. SBut my cat was in thereI"m pretty bummed about that.
S[Doing the tour] is the best thing for me, she continues. SFor something like that to happen just as I was about to head out on tour is a good way for me to try and channel that energy into something positive instead of wallowing in depression.
SI love my house. It"s a special place and everything in there was something that I hand-picked. But it"s just stuff. That"s a lot easier to walk away from.
SIt took me a year to get over [her other cat] Ludwig passing away, and then I got Valentine. What bothers me most is that she was just a little baby.
Von D doesn"t know what started the fire, but thinks it was electrical.
SI"m lucky that I found my passport amongst all the rubble. I almost missed the flight.
